Sedgwick Chudleigh is the associated Bermuda office of the international law firm, Sedgwick Detert Moran and Arnold LLP (Sedgwick). Sedgwick was founded in 1933 in San Francisco and evolved to become one of the leading insurance and litigation firms in the United States. Sedgwick boasts one of the largest international insurance industry teams. Sedgwick’s lawyers have a long history in the Bermuda market and have been servicing Bermuda clients since the mid-1980s.

Sedgwick Chudleigh is focused on the insurance, reinsurance and financial services sectors. The bedrock of the practice is dispute resolution and insurance/reinsurance coverage. In addition, the office undertakes contract drafting and general advisory/regulatory work.

Insurance Support

Sedgwick Chudleigh provides claims and audit support to insurers and reinsurers operating in the Bermuda market. This includes supervision of outside audits on behalf of Bermuda-based ceding insurers, conduct of underwriting and claims audits for Bermuda and overseas reinsurers as well as claims management support. Sedgwick Chudleigh also acts as a third party claims agent for insurers, handling entire programs of business. With offices located throughout the United States, Sedgwick is able to offer on-shore assistance with auditing and claims management for US-based claims. Sedgwick’s London office is able to assist Bermuda reinsurers in relation to reviews of London market ceding insurers.

Commercial Disputes

Together with its Bermuda-qualified lawyers, Sedgwick Chudleigh works closely with lawyers in Sedgwick’s London office on commercial litigation and counseling matters. In addition to matters involving professionals working in the insurance industry, Sedgwick Chudleigh handles matters involving professionals working in Bermuda’s off-shore and financial services industries, including banks, law firms, accountants/auditors, trust companies, mutual/hedge funds and fund managers and administrators. This includes matters involving insolvency and bankruptcy, restructuring and claims by shareholders against directors.

Although directly and closely affiliated with Sedgwick, Sedgwick Chudleigh is an independent law firm based in Hamilton, Bermuda and is regulated under the Bermuda Bar Act 1974.

Money Laundering and Tax Evasion Policy

Sedgwick Chudleigh has a “zero tolerance” policy regarding money laundering and tax evasion and adheres strictly to Bermuda’s anti-money laundering regulations. Where appropriate, Sedgwick Chudleigh will report its suspicions to the requisite authorities.
